Modruš

Modruš [ mɔdruʃ ] is a village in Croatia, which played an important role in the early history of the country.

Geography

The place is located just south in the municipality Josipdol on an important trade route in ancient times, the continental hinterland through a salt road (later known as Josephine Street ) from Karlovac Senj linked to on the coast. Geographically it belongs to the region of Lika and administratively to the County of Karlovac.

History

Modruš was founded by the Romans in the year 820 as a fortress around the city. In 1193 the Hungarian- Croatian king Bela II left the third son of Dujam I, the Bartol II, Prince of Krk, the city and the castle Modruš, later called Castle Tržan, and the associated country.

1493 moved the Bishop Christopher on the occasion of the battle on the field of Krbava the seat of the diocese of Modruš to Novi Vinodolski.

In the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia was the place its name to the county Modruš - Rijeka, whose county seat was located in the nearby Ogulin.
