Mohelno

Mohelenská is a městys ( market town ) in the Czech Republic. It is situated in South Moravia 11 km northwest of the city Moravian Krumlov. The place belongs to the Okres Třebíč Kraj in the highlands.

Geography

Mohelenská situated on the Jihlava in the southeastern area of the hill country Jevisovicka pahorkatina, a subsystem of the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands. Southwest of the village, the river to the dam Mohelenská is dammed, which serves, among other things, to supply the nearby nuclear power plant Dukovany.

Neighboring towns are Dukovany in the south, and Lhánice Senorady in the east, Kladeruby nad oslavou in the north and in the west Kramolín.

History

Several preserved Iron Age burial mounds in the local area are evidence of prehistoric settlement. In the 12th century there was here probably already have a stronghold; The first written mention of the village dates back to the year 1234. During the years 1237-1349 was Mohelenská royal estate and seat of a viscount. In 1368 it was taken over by noble possession. In the Hussite Wars, the town was plundered and destroyed the fortress. To date, extensive cellars have been preserved among many houses that were used as hiding places. They originate presumably from this period. 1527 Mohelenská slammed the rule in Náměšť nad Oslavou.

On 12 April 2007 the town was granted the status of a městys again.
