Mountain cottage on the mountain Mönchswalder

The Mönchswalder Mountain, Upper Sorbian Mnišonc, is a mountain in the Saxon Upper Lusatia. It is located about three kilometers north of the city Wilthen in the district of Bautzen and is part of the Lusatian mountains. On the mountain there is a mountain cottage with a lookout tower and a radio mast of Deutsche Telekom.

Location

The mountain is surrounded by a chain of villages in the densely populated Spreetals. To the south are located next to the city Wilthen the villages and small Kirschau Postwitz, to the east and to the north Rodewitz Obergurig and Großpostwitz. Only the north-west, the ridge continues without major settlements to the mountain Tschelentsy. In between is the Hunter House Pass ( 383 m), which lies on the ancient trade route Bohemian climbing.

History

For centuries the mountain was called Wetzkischer forest and mountain Wilthener. The forests around the mountain belonged to the 15th century in addition to the family Bautzen Common also a small monastery whose monks the place Mönchswalde founded on the northern slope of the mountain. This place was named after the nearby peaks.

As of 1884, Bautzen Mountain Club in Spreetal, a growing interest to build a mountain cottage with a lookout tower. On 1 May 1884, the building was finally decided its funding came with share certificates and donations. After overcoming all sorts of financial cliffs was celebrated on September 28, 1885, the inauguration. Since then, the mountain is a magnet for hikers and trekkers.

Besides upgrading the mountain with water pipe ( 1896), society and space bandstand came in the sixties of the twentieth century, the Pumphut pavilion to its roof is modeled on the hat of the legendary sorcerer Oberlausitzer Martin Pumphut.

View

The best view of the mountain provides from the tower of the mountain cottage. From the observation deck you have a comprehensive outlook to a range of mountains in the area such as the Listen, the Jedlova ( Tannenberg ), which Weifaer height, the Great Picho and Valtenberg. Under good seeing conditions one sees in the north, the cooling towers of power plants Boxberg and Schwarze Pumpe, in the southeast by the Jizera and Giant Mountains and the ridge as well as in the Southwest, some peaks of Saxon Switzerland.
