History
Finds of hill forts ( Portuguese: Castro ) evidence of a settlement by Celtiberian, to the capture of the area by the Romans under Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus in the 2nd century BC After an initial award of city rights ( Foral ) by King Sancho I received the place in 1514 renewed city rights by Manuel I.
In the 18th century Mondim de Basto seat of a newly formed circle, due to its nationally known market, its relatively large number of buildings, and its national reputation as a supplier of leather, shoes and tannins.
