History

Dolmens and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement to the Castro culture. To be mentioned are, in particular, the findings of Chacim and Outeirinho de Mouros in the community Refojos, and of Formigueiro in the municipality of Rio Douro. So a Goldlunula and two gold discs were found from the Bronze Age.

An early, dedicated to the Archangel Michael monastery was built here, probably after the arrival of the Suevi 406, or from 585 in the Visigothic kingdom. 711 the Arabs conquered the monastery and village and destroyed it largely. Cabeceiras de Basto was probably repopulated during the Reconquista in the 12th century. A new monastery was built here in the early 12th century and was the destination of many pilgrims, including well-known people such as Inês de Castro Nuno Álvares Pereira or who in 1376 married here.

1514 was the municipal charter by King D. Manuel. Later Cabeceiras de Basto gained some cultural relevance. So it was in the works of Sá de Miranda ( in a Carta D. António Pereira ), Bernardim Ribeiro, and mentioned especially Camilo Castelo Branco, especially in Bruxa de Monte Cordova and Noites de Lamego.

The place name

A common explanation of the name goes back to the allegedly founded by members arrived here Bastos ( Bastulos or Bastianos ), a population group from Galicia, which was after the attacks sold 711 by the Moors. Tariq ibn Ziyad ( Tarik ) conquered 711 the Visigothic kingdom to the Cabeceiras de Basto belonged, and thereby destroyed the village largely.

Another explanation sees the origin of the place name in the time of the presence of the Romans and the Latin term vastu or pastu, in reference to the local pastures. Cabeceiras originated in the adoption of the Latin capitia and the later Pluralsufix eiras, so that the place name is said to have originally means " excellent rich pastures ".

Another explanation is based on a granite statue from the 1st century BC in place, but this was probably edited in the 17th and 19th centuries several times. You want to represent the Lusitanian warrior Basto, who should have stood as a name Pate.

In the population particularly the explanation of the name was popularized by means of a traditional legend. So shall the monk knight Hermígio Romarigues, originally from the family of the founder of the first monastery of São Miguel de Refojos de Basto, who place the 711 defended against the onrushing army of Tarik. And he shall have brought to the bridge to the monastery and meet the attackers call: Até Ali, por São Miguel, até Ali, basto eu! (English as: " until here and no further order of St. Michael 's sake, up to this point and no further, for that I should meet "). Then, three rush of Arabs remained unsuccessful and the monk knights henceforth Basto ( Eng.: I meet ) have been called. The granite statue in place to represent this legend, those knights " Basto ".
