History

Finds of dolmens and Antas evidence of a settlement of the municipality at least since Neolithic times. Celtiberians later settled here. The Romans transformed it be subjected to some of their hill forts ( Portuguese: Castro ) in their own settlements around, and here built Roman roads and bridges.

The present town was first mentioned in the 6th century in the course of administrative division of territories. Mont Alegre got his first town charter ( Foral ) in 1273 by King Alfonso III. They were renewed several times by the following kings.

In the course of administrative reform in 1836, according to the Liberal revolution in Portugal ( 1822), the previously existing circuit Mont Alegre was reduced by spin-off, however, remained to this day as an independent circuit.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

With the Pista Automóvel de Mont Alegre Padornelos the community has in the Serra do Larouco on a motor racing track, various national car, motorcycle and truck races are held on every year.
