Murmur (album)

Occupation

Murmur is the first full album of post-punk and alternative rock band REM later

The album

Published in April 1983, Murmur was the follow-up album of their debut album Chronic Town (EP) in the previous year. The sound on Murmur characterizes the quieter, more introverted side of the first wave of post-punk in the USA. The sound was new, although the basic structure of the songs of traditional rock music corresponded. The guitar sound is comparable with that of the Byrds and the bass has the expressive sound of the Rickenbacker, bassist Mike Mills plays the most.

As most experienced musicians in the band with his bass Mills contributes to the melodic element of music at the grumpy / moody sound of the early REM albums. Characteristic is also the distant way, as Michael Stipe sings. Its gloomy lyrics give the music a certain mystique and depth. However, Murmur is a respected album, which can already imagine the great popularity of the SEM will come eventually.

An important component of the atmospheric and stylistic success of Murmur is the perfect blend of bass and significantly reduced voice, similar to the post-punk band The Psychedelic Furs on their first two albums. Murmur was produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, recorded in Charlotte, North Carolina and published by the indie label IRS Records.

The framework, which is pictured on the album cover, was originally part of the railway line of the Georgia Railroad, which led directly to Athens and became something of a local attraction. Plans, the framework ( which is now commonly referred to as the " Murmur scaffolding " ) to demolish, brought a public outcry. On 2 October 2000, the Chairman of specific Athens- Clarke County and the Committee established that the framework will be saved.

First Murmur climbed into the U.S. at # 36 and was eventually certified gold in 1991. 2002 album of the music magazine Rolling Stone in the ranking " The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time ", No. 197 was listed in 2003 and designated the TV channel VH1 Murmur as the 92- best album in music history.
