The One I Love (R.E.M. song)

The One I Love is one of the songs of the album Document (1987 ) by REM In the American charts, the song landed at number seven in 1987, and in 1991 after the publication in the UK at number 16 of the local charts.

The lyrics of the song is very simple, the three stanzas differ only minimal changes to the text and are supplemented by the alarming call of "Fire" (fire). The guitar riff from Peter Buck, played both at the beginning and at "Fire " has a high recognition value. In March 2005, the song by the British music magazine Q is set to number 57 of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

The One I Love is part of the standard repertoire in live performances by REM, as for example, Losing My Religion, Man on the Moon and It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine ), which also comes from the album Document.

The title is often misunderstood by the public as a love song, although Stipe sees him as a brutal and cynical title. For example, the text includes the line " a simple prop to occupy my time", which means as much as " simply to have someone to pass the time ." Stipe commented in an interview with the Stuttgarter Zeitung: " Last night I sang it, and a couple in the third row has looked in love and holding hands. I just thought: 'Oh my God .' "

In addition, the song on Guitar Hero World Tour and Rocksmith 2014 is playable.
