Neftekumsk

Neftekumsk (Russian Нефтекумск ) is a city in Stavropol (Russia) region with 27,687 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 300 km east of the regional capital Stavropol on the right bank of the Kuma.

Neftekumsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The nearest railway station is located in the Budjonnowsk 80 kilometers away.

History

Neftekumsk was created in 1958 in connection with the development of the Stavropol in 1953 discovered oil and gas deposits. The name is from the name of the river and the Russian word neft derived for petroleum.

In 1962 the place the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1968 the municipal law.
