Nelson Emerson

Nelson Emerson ( born August 17, 1967 in Hamilton, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach of present - which, in its active period from 1986 to 2002, including for the St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, Atlanta Thrashers and Los Angeles Kings played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Nelson Emerson began his career as a hockey player at Bowling Green State University, which he attended from 1986 to 1990 while he was playing in parallel for their hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. He has received numerous individual awards. Even as a junior player, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1985 in the third round than a total of 44 players from the St. Louis Blues. For their farm team from Peoria Rivermen of the International Hockey League he was towards the end of the 1989/90 season his debut in professional hockey. In the following season the winger won the Turner Cup with Peoria. He was honored as rookie of the year the IHL with the Garry F. Longman Memorial Trophy and was elected to the first All-Star team in the league. In parallel, he came to his first four missions of the National Hockey League for the St. Louis Blues, where until 1993 he had a regular place in the NHL from 1991.

In September 1993, Emerson was transferred together with Stéphane Quintal in exchange for Phil Housley in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets, where he spent the next two years. Also two seasons he remained thereupon at the Hartford Whalers. When these were resettled in 1997, he first ran also for its successor team Carolina Hurricanes, before he was released to the Chicago Blackhawks in December 1998 in exchange for Paul Coffey. However, even before the season ends already followed by another transfer. In exchange for Chris Murray, he was discharged to the Ottawa Senators, but for which he only played seven games. In August 1999, the Canadians signed a contract as a free agent with the Atlanta Thrashers, for which he in 58 games 33 scorer points, including 14 goals scored. Shortly before the end of the Trade Deadline was followed in March 1999, the change to the Los Angeles Kings along with Kelly Buchberger in exchange for Donald Audette and Frantisek Kaberle. With the Kings, he ended following the 2001/ 02 season, his playing career at the age of 35 years.

From 2006 to 2009 Emerson worked as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL.

Internationally

For Canada, Emerson took part in the World Championships 1992, 1994 and 1998. In the 1994 World Cup he won the gold medal with his team. He himself contributed two goals and two assists in eight games with the title.
