Kelly Buchberger

Kelly Buchberger ( born December 2, 1966 in Langenburg, Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and current assistant coach of the Edmonton Oilers. During his playing career he played 1986-2004 for the Edmonton Oilers, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

Career

Kelly Buchberger began his career as a hockey player with the Moose Jaw Warriors, which until 1986 he was active from 1984 in the Western Hockey League. During this time he was in the ninth round as 188 total players selected during the NHL Entry Draft in 1985 by the Edmonton Oilers. For the NHL team the Oilers winger was in the Stanley Cup final games of the season 1986/87 his debut. The final series was won by the Oilers, so that Buchberger won in his rookie season, his first Stanley Cup. Three years later he won with the Oilers for the second time the cup. Although this also won Edmonton 1987/88, however, the attacker this season played mainly in their farm team, where he stood for the Nova Scotia Oilers of the American Hockey League on the ice.

On 25 June 1999, the Canadian expansion was selected the 1999 draft by the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL, leaving therefore was the last player who won a Stanley Cup with the Oilers, Edmonton. Shortly before the end of the Trade Deadline in March 2000 Buchberger was released to the Los Angeles Kings, for whom he played until 2002. His last two positions as players were in the season 2002 /03, the Phoenix Coyotes and 2003/ 04, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Immediately after the end of his career Buchberger was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Road Runners of the American Hockey League, the former farm team of his longtime employer, the Edmonton Oilers in the 2004/05 season. Following that season, he was accepted as a development coach in the management of the association. During the 2007/ 08 season Buchberger worked first time as head coach, as he missed with the Springfield Falcons, Edmonton's AHL farm team, the playoffs. Nevertheless, he was admitted to the coaching staff of the Edmonton Oilers before the 2008/ 09 season as an assistant coach.

Internationally

For Canada Buchberger took part in the World Championships in 1993, 1994 and 1996. In the 1994 World Cup Buchberger was with his team world champion, in 1996 Vice World Champion.
