Nesslau is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The municipality is located in the constituency of Toggenburg. The new settlement was established on 1 January 2013, the existing communities Nesslau -Krummenau and stone. Until 31 December 2004, there was ever a community Nesslau without Krummenau and stone.

Geography

The villages Nesslau- Neu St. Johann, Krummenau and Stein (SG ) are in the upper Thurtal and Ennetbühl in Luterental to Schwägalp Pass road. The municipality belongs to a part of the highest conglomerate-rock mountain in Europe, the Speers (1950 m), and part of the Alpsteins. The municipal area extends east to the pass Schwägalp, which forms the border with the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Highest mountain entirely on the municipality is 2158 m with the silver plates of the Alpsteinarea near the Santis. Through the municipal area flow the Thur and the Luteren. The two factors are presented in the coat of arms as two silver wave beams. By the former municipality of stone also flows the Wissthur. Near the village of Krummenau the valley station of the Wolzenalp - pathways that lead to the Wolzenalp located in Nesslau and provide access to the same ski and hiking area. The community is served by the railway line of the South Eastern Railway from Wattwil, with the stations in Krummenau and Nesslau- Neu St. Johann. From Nesslau the postal bus lines lead to Stein - Wild House - Buchs SG on the one hand and on the Schwägalp to Urnäsch other.

History

From the 12th century, the region was colonized by the Counts of Toggenburg and from the Abbey of St. Gall. From the 13th century, the first mention of a farm Nesselove and a Good Crummenouve come. In the 16th century, the market town Sidwald began to develop as a major livestock and goods market. After fires in the Convent of St. John in today's Alt St. Johann, 1626 has started with the construction of a new monastery at Sidwald, which came as the new name Neu St. Johann. In the course of the secularization of the Abbey of St. Gall, the monastery became the parish and in parts of the plant, the special education center Johanneum was later established, which today is the largest employer in the community.

1524 in Krummenau, 1528 introduced the Reformation in Nesslau and the communities remained equal to 1806. Then the Catholic and Reformed parish was separated by the establishment of the Catholic parish of Neu St. Johann. After the founding of the canton of St. Gallen 1803, the political communities Krummenau, Nesslau and stone were founded. Nesslau 1831-2002 was the capital of Upper Toggenburg.

Middle of the 19th century were naturalized under the Act to combat homelessness in Neu St. Johann Jenische families.

In addition to today's important to agriculture, the source of sulfur in Rietbad Ennetbühl was already known in the Middle Ages and there was a modest spa tourism. 1857 founded the brothers Emil and Gustav Gnipper in Neu St. Johann, a textile company that was later acquired by the family Meyer- Mayor and exists to this day. The country-wide fundraising campaign brought a total of 930,000 francs, of which about 670,000 francs was used for houses and housing equipment and the rest for a new water supply.
