New York gubernatorial election, 1817

The gubernatorial election in New York from 1817 took place in April / May 1817 the Governor and the Vice Governor of New York, were elected.

Prehistory

Governor Daniel D. Tompkins was elected in November 1816 as Vice President of the United States so that he resigned in February 1817 from his post as governor of New York. Article XVII of the New York Constitution of 1777 stated that " ... should be as often as vacant the seat of government, a wise and prudent " Freeholder " should be selected by a vote of the governor, ..., where the elections always at that time and place should be held if the deputies are elected in the assembly ... " This meant the occurrence of a vacancy, the Vice- Governor to the Governor not succeeded immediately to the office, but the state only until the end of the annual term of office of New York State Assembly administered on June 30, and the successor was elected in the following April.

Porter did not run for the office of governor, but the Tammany organization, which was hostile to Clinton. This distributed Re-count with Porter's name in New York City, some of which were released. For the Democratic- Republican Party DeWitt Clinton came along with John Tayler.
