History

The main railway station was built in 1872-1873 in the course of construction of the Frankfurt- Bebra railway and was given a reception building in the Neo-Renaissance style. The owner was the Royal Railway Directorate Frankfurt ( Main). Initially located in the middle of fields, the gap with urban development began to close until 10 years later. Due to the urban development of the previously installed at the same level with road tracks in the period from 1912 to 1926 had to be laid on a railway embankment in order to bridge the growing road crossing freely. These had to be set high and the track area of the station. A new building of the reception building was not because of the bad economic situation in question. The station building was from 1923 to 1927 after a design of the web architect Ernst de la sauce and Franz Schenck only radically restructured. There was a cubic building with corner pavilions in the style of Expressionism and the German Art Deco with a " conservative- traditionalist charisma '. The station building is a cultural monument under the Hessian Monument Protection Act. On the platform, between track 1 and 2, there is a bird's fountain, which was designed by Bruno Schaefer.

The station is part of the project Route of Industrial Heritage Rhein- Main.

Importance

After the main station was connected from May 1996 temporarily to the ICE network of the Deutsche Bahn, today it is disconnected again mainly from long-distance transport. Up to two IC connections per day, only regional connections are made to destinations within Hesse and Bavaria.

Even before the Offenbach Hauptbahnhof was in its meaning greatly reduced because the Offenbach crossing lines of the S- Bahn Rhein -Main were moved into a tunnel under the Offenbach city center, a route that bypasses the Central Station and situated in the western area partly to the route of the former Frankfurt- Offenbach local Railway modeled.

After the German railway had not invested in the station building for some time, and the switch of the railway was closed so that the Offenbach Hauptbahnhof is now no longer occupied by railway staff in January 2011. Also on the part of the Magistrate - - In Offenbach some intense criticism at the Deutsche Bahn loud. There was criticism in this context that those responsible can not be reached at the Deutsche Bahn for the city of Offenbach de facto.

Due to the decreasing traffic-related importance of the station a part of the reception building of the School of Design for use as a studio for students was provided free of charge.

Future Development

Since the timetable change 2006/2007 the hold of the IC connection from Passau to Hamburg is omitted in the Offenbach Hauptbahnhof. The S- Bahn train connections Offenbach main station was cut because the features of the S2 are bound from that time through the tunnel of the City route Offenbach and Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel on June 14, 2010.

The city of Offenbach am Main aims at nevertheless, the main railway station and the Offenbach Ost Bahnhof combine functionally to link bus, S -Bahn, regional and long distance traffic there. The German Bahn AG is these plans, but because of the existing good links Offenbach to Frankfurt Main Station and the busy Frankfurt- Bebra railway critically.

Are the plans, however, fully implemented, this could reduce the importance of the Offenbach Central Station on.
