Olancho Department

Olancho is one of 18 departments in Honduras in Central America.

It is also the largest department in the country and is bordered to the south by Nicaragua. The capital of Olancho is Juticalpa.

The west and north of the region is mountainous - there are the mountain ranges of the Sierra de Agalta, Montaña de Tembladeros and Montaña de Botaderos. Central Olancho is dominated by cattle farming and agriculture. The eastern part of the region is covered by rainforest. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve is also located in this region.

The drug-related crime has risen sharply, especially in the department of Olancho in recent years. Small aircraft from South America to use the width of the department to turn over drugs.
