Lempira Department

Lempira is one of 18 departments in Honduras in Central America.

The department is located in the west of the country on the border with El Salvador. The capital city of Gracias Lempira is. Named the department for a local Mayan Warriors ( Maya Lenca ) called Lempira fought in the 16th century against the Spanish conquistadors. Lempira is also the name of the current Honduran currency.

In Lempira is located next to the Celaque National Park Cerro Las Minas and the - the highest mountain in Honduras with 2,849 meters.
