Choluteca Department

Choluteca is one of the 18 departments in the Central American country of Honduras.

It is the southernmost region in Honduras on the Gulf of Fonseca, and is bordered to the east and south of Nicaragua. The capital is the city of Choluteca Choluteca.

The department was founded in 1825 as one of the original administrative units after the independence of Honduras. Its present form was Choluteca in 1893 with the separation of the western part of the department and the simultaneous creation of the department of Valle.
