Olhão is located on the so-called sand - Algarve, the Sotavento. We are talking about the land that extends between the airport of Faro and the Spanish border in the east of Portugal.
History
Today the district belonged to the Roman province of Lusitania. The Roman bridge in Quelfes is one of the most important evidence from this period. After it was from the early 8th century the Arabic al -Andalus, the area with the completion of the Portuguese Reconquista was in 1250 part of the Kingdom of Portugal, without having been but newly settled in the port.

Sports
In place of Sporting Clube Olhanense founded in 1912, is located. His professional football team in 2009 rose in the first Portuguese league. It plays its home games at Estádio José Arcanjo. Also, basketball, cycling and futsal are operated in SC Olhanense.

The place is connected by the railway line Linha do Algarve Lagos, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António.
About the removed as highway national road N125 the place with Faro is connected, and with its 12 km from the junction of the A22 motorway (exit # 14 ).
