The location in a valley and on the slopes of the mountain Fóia city is mainly because of their proximity (7 km) situated as a health resort and tourist six bathrooms " Caldas de Monchique " and the 902 -meter-high vantage Fóia known. The surrounding mountains Serra de Monchique spring sources that fill a large part of the reservoirs of the Algarve.

History

Inhabited since the Stone Age area received a first urban settlement, when the Romans the place " Mons Cicus " built to take advantage of the Caldas de Monchique ( mineral springs ).

In the 16th century visited the young King Sebastian of Monchique and intended to bring the place to Vila ( town ). The king died shortly afterwards in the battle of Alcácer - Quibir Portugal and consequently lost its independence it became troublesome again until after 1640. Monchique was raised only in 1773 to Vila. At the same time, it became the seat of its own circle, by splitting off from the circle of Silves. It had now as a production of wool and linen, and as a supplier of chestnut wood and wood products become important. The industrialization of the place then its emerging importance lost again.

Today Monchique is especially known for its thermal springs and the Serra de Monchique, and internationally. Economy

The tourism in the thermal springs plays an essential role. Mention should also be arts and crafts, woodworking, pig breeding and agriculture, including the production of olive oil and cork. Well known are the local hams and sausages, and the regional specialty liquor Medronho is produced here.

The author and journalist José António Gascon (1851-1950) was born here.

In Monchique the musician and music producer Manfred " Manne " Praeker (1951-2012) ran his recording studio "Mad Mix Studio ". As bassist for the groups locomotive Kreuzberg, Nina Hagen Band and Spliff he was one of the most important representatives of German rock music. He produced the first albums by Nena and their hit " 99 Luftballons " as well as albums for Extra Wide and Doctors.
