Olite

Olite (Basque Erriberri ) is a city in the Comunidad Foral Navarra in northern Spain. It is located 42 km south of Pamplona and 50 km north of Tudela.

History

According to Isidore of Seville ( 560-636 ) ( Historia de Regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum ) the settlement Oligicus by the Visigoth Suinthila ( 621-631 ) was founded. In fact, the walls of a settlement have been excavated from the 1st century, on which Olite was founded later. 1147 Olite received the first statute, the Fuero de los francos de Estella. In 1266 the city were granted 15 market days per year. In the same year Olite was meeting the Navarrese Cortes. Beginning of the 15th century was built the Gothic Palacio Real de Olite, the residence of King Charles III. of Navarre ( 1361-1425 ). With the end of state independence of Navarre also ended the heyday of the city.
