Örebro

Örebro [ œrəbru ː ] is a town in the Swedish province of Örebro County and the historic province of Orebro. It is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

Geography

Örebro is situated on the river Svartan in the Hjalmaren, Sweden's fourth largest lake, empties shortly after. About the Arbogaån Mälaren and the city is connected to Stockholm.

Örebro is situated about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm, 300 km east of Oslo and 300 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg.

History

Birger Jarl had in 1265 secured a ford across the river Svartån by a fortified tower. The town was founded in the Middle Ages as a port for the iron trade. In the mountains Kilsbergen in the northwestern part of the province of Orebro Lan many iron mines and smelters former residents. In winter you drove with the iron in the town, and sold it at Mass at St. Henry's Day. The traditional Hindersmässan is still celebrated every year in the last week of January.

In the 15th century, the city gained greater political importance among Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson. Among the fifteen held in Örebro Empire days was remarkable, on which Sweden declared by January 4, 1540 to hereditary monarchy.

In 1854 the city burned down to its foundations and was then constructed from stone. In 1887, Örebro had 13,618 inhabitants. In the 19th century Örebro became the center of shoe manufacturing in Sweden. Until the 1960s the city was still in the strong growth and had just built a new water tower ( Svampen, " The mushroom ", with restaurant and observation tower, architect Sune Lindström ) and a high-rise ( Krämaren, 22 floors), as the shoe industry went down. The establishment of a state administration authority ( for statistics and traffic safety ) could not fully compensate.

The college was founded in 1967, received university status in 1999 and since then is called Örebro University.

Economy and Transport

The city has a university, an airport (ORB) and a convenient location for the trade in the European roads 20 ( Gothenburg -Stockholm - Örebro - Eskilstuna ) and 18 (Oslo- Karlstad - Stockholm - Västerås Örebro ).

Örebro is the seat of the small brewery Orebro Kulturbryggeri.

Religion

Due to the geographical breakdown of the Swedish Church, the area is subject to the bishopric Straengnaes.

Attractions

  • The landmark of the city is the Castle ( Örebro slott ). It is located on a small island in the middle of the city.
