Orvin

Orvin is a municipality in the administrative district in the canton of Bern Bernese Jura in Switzerland. The former German name Ilfingen is used today any more.

Geography

Orvin is at 669 m above sea level. M., 3 km northwest of Biel (air line). The scattered village extends in the Valley of Orvine, a right side of Bach Suze ( Suze French ), in a basin in the southern Jura.

The area of ​​21.4 km ² large municipality territory, which includes the central part of the basin tilted to the east of Orvin. The southern boundary is the most wooded anticline ridge of Magglingen (up to 1,092 m above sea level. M. ). Population

With 1195 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Orvin one of the larger towns in the Bernese Jura. Of the 82.5 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking and 14.2 % 1.1 % speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Orvin amounted in 1850 to 659 residents in 1900 to 766 inhabitants. Since 1960 (796 inhabitants) a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Orvin was formerly dominated mainly by agriculture, which predominate in the basin farming and fruit growing, in the higher and shadier locations meadows and pastures. Today, only 12 % of the workforce are employed in agriculture. The village has since changed to residential community with some companies in the Electrical, mechanical engineering, textile processing as well as local small businesses. Many working population commuters and work in the city of Biel.

Traffic

The municipality is situated on the main road from Frinvillier on the plateau Montagne de Diesse. By Postbus course, which runs from Biel via Frinvillier by Orvin, the village is connected to the network of public transport.

Tourism

Les Prés- d'Orvin is a popular tourist destination and walking area with many vacation or weekend homes. During the winter are high on the northeastern slopes of Mont Sujet two ski lifts and three baby lifts. A total of 7 km of slopes and a toboggan run are available.

History

During Roman times, led the Vy d' Etra, a partially paved road, past the site of the present town. Later many other names appear: Ulvingen ( 962) Ulvench ( 1178 ), Ulveius ( 1228 ). The result was the German name Ilfingen while developed the French form Orvin on Urvin. The place name probably derives from the Germanic personal name Ulf.

The village belonged until 1797 to rule Erguel, which was under the Bishopric of Basel, where the town Biel from time to time exercised greater influence. In the years 1724, 1754 and 1801 respectively numerous houses village fires fell victim. From 1797 to 1815 Orvin belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, which was connected to the 1800 Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the Canton of Bern. During the era of railway construction Orvin got more and more into isolation. To a field change occurred in 1880, when the hamlet Pré de Macolin was ceded to Evilard.

Attractions

Today's Protestant parish church was built in 1722 on a ridge south of the town center on the site of a late Gothic previous building. It has stained glass windows from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as wall paintings from the construction period. The town center with cobbled streets and close-set houses from the 17th to the 19th century has a southern character.
