Otsu Cities (Japanese大 津市-shi, dt large port ) is a city on the southern shore of Lake Biwa in Kansai, western Japan. It is the administrative center of Shiga Prefecture.

History

Otsu Cities was among the Tennō Tenji and kobun of 667-672 as Ōmi - kyō or Ōmi no Miyako (近 江 京, dt "Capital of Ōmi " ) is the capital of Japan.

On May 11, 1891, came here to Otsu Cities incident when the Russian heir to the throne of Nicholas II by the policeman Tsuda Sanzo was attacked after a day trip to Lake Biwa with a saber.

Administrative history

On 1 October 1898, the Chō Otsu Cities (大 津 町) in Shiga -gun was appointed Shi. On May 10, 1932 Shiga was (滋 贺 村, -mura ), on April 1, 1933 Ishiyama (石山 町, -chō ) and Zeze (膳 所 町, -chō ), on April 1, 1951 Ogata (雄 琴 村, -mura ), Sakamoto (坂 本村, -mura ), Shimosakamoto (下 阪 本村, -mura ) in Shiga -gun, Ōishi (大 石村, -mura ), Shimotanakami (下田 上 村, -mura ) in Kurita -gun, on 1 April 1967 Seta (瀬 田 町, chō ) (坚 田 町, chō ) (志 贺 町, chō ) incorporated in the Kurita -gun, Katada Shiga -gun and on 20 March 2006 Shiga Shiga -gun in Otsu Cities. The Shiga -gun was thereupon be dissolved.

The first civic center of Japan was established in Otsu Cities.

Attractions and Events

Many major historical temples, especially the Mii -dera and the Ishiyama -dera, and the scenic location on the shores of Lake Biwa, Otsu Cities make it an attractive tourist destination. In Ōmi - jingū the Tenji - tennō is worshiped, as there is a clock museum. The Enryaku -ji is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities ).

On the first Sunday in March will be held in Otsu Cities of Lake Biwa Marathon, one of the oldest and most important marathons in Japan.

Famous throughout Kansai is the great Biwako Fireworks 8 August each year over the lake, with especially large fireworks.

The Otsu Cities Matsuri is held every year on the two days prior to the date of the sport, that is the beginning of October instead. Characteristic is the procession of 13 Hikiyama, richly decorated and declared as an important cultural treasures wooden wagons not worn in contrast to the more widely mikoshi through the streets, but are drawn. Very similar to the Hikiyama the Yoi -yama Gion Matsuri of Kyoto will be issued on the eve in different streets, on the occasion of which results in an atmospheric folk festival in the city center.

Otsu Cities and Würzburg

From the twin city of Würzburg in Germany, the poet Max Dauthendey that a visit to Japan in 1906 to his work inspired the eight faces at Lake Biwa comes. The Japanese translation of the work appeared in 2004.

Has a faithful replica of a large Baroque flower pot from the courtyard garden of the Wurzburg Residence a place of honor in front of the main entrance of the City Hall Ōtsuer. On the shores of Lake Biwa, a built of Würzburg carpenters house is located in the Franconian style with a small museum on the 1st floor and a rustic Franconian restaurant with lakeside terrace called "Würzburg ".
