Patrik Järbyn

Patrik Inge Johan Järbyn ( born April 16, 1969 in Borås ) is a former Swedish alpine skier. He started mainly in the downhill and super -G. Järbyn won in the course of his nearly twenty year career three World Championship medals and achieved three podiums in the World Cup. He holds the record as the oldest World Cup podium drivers.

Biography

Järbyn is five -time Olympian. He was at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, 1998 in Nagano, 2002 Salt Lake City, Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 here. His best finish in 1998 he reached the Super G in Nagano with the sixth place.

The greatest success of his career, he celebrated at the World Championships in 1996 in the Sierra Nevada. Behind the Norwegian Atle Skårdal he won the silver medal in the Super -G. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre, he won the bronze medal in the downhill and with the Swedish team the silver medal in the team competition. Järbyn is the oldest athlete who has ever won at a World Ski Championships medals.

Despite his long career he could never win a World Cup race. His best finish in a World Cup race in 1998 was the second rank in the Super G Kvitfjell. In September 2007 Järbyn suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his left knee in a practice crash in Chile. Despite the injury throughout the season 2007/ 08 and the advanced age he sat then continued his career. On 19 December 2008 he drove in the Super G in Val Gardena on the third place, at the age of 39 years and 8 months; that he is by far the oldest rider ever to reach a podium in the World Cup.

At the Olympic Winter Games on February 19, 2010 Järbyn suffered a crash in Whistler in the Super- G of the men and was transported by helicopter to the hospital, where a slight concussion and abrasions were diagnosed in the facial area. A few weeks later he started again in the World Cup. In March 2012 he announced his retirement from professional racing.
