History

The site may have been first mentioned in a deed of gift of wine country at the monastery of St. Gall as Openwilare: Propterea vernacula terra juris mei in loco, qui dicitur Openwilare, Tradimus sancto Galloni viginti juchos, et in unum Eberingen Juchum de vinea. The document dates from a January 16 during the reign of the Frankish king Chilperic II, who ruled from June 715 to March 721 without year specification, it is only the ruling king Chilperic mentioned ( without number). The internal affairs of the Frankish Empire make a construction of the act in the years 717/718 most likely. The reign of Chilperic I. ( 561-584 ) ruled out, because at that time the monastery of St. Gall did not yet exist. More Chilperic did not exist.

The research, however, assumes that Openwilare probably not Pfaffenweiler or Öhlinsweiler, but a later abandoned hamlet in northern Schneckental between Pfaffenweiler and Wolfenweiler was in the range of today's municipal area borders both towns. A number of such hamlets are occupied for that time for the Schneckental.

For centuries, stone carving was an important source of income besides agriculture and viticulture. So the sculptor Jörg Kempf created in 1561 from the pulpit of the Freiburg Minster Pfaffenweiler limestone. Probably the oldest inn is the " room" in the district Öhlinsweiler, built in 1574/75. As a " room" it served partly as an office building.

From 1492 to 1811 the location on the other side of the mountain village chunk Scherzingen belonged to Pfaffenweiler. Scherzingen was then independently and has been part of local government reform in 1974 to honor churches.
