Pierre Guffroy

Pierre -Jacques Guffroy ( born April 22, 1926 in Paris, † 27 September 2010 in France) was a French art director and production designer, who both once won an Academy Award and three times the César for Best Production Design. He thus became the most awarded in addition to Jacques Saulnier and Alexandre Trauner with the César in this category.

Life

Guffroy began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1957 with the film Arsène Lupin, the Millionendieb (Les aventures d' Arsène Lupin ) and worked until 1998 at the scenic and facilities for over sixty films.

In 1967 he was nominated Willy Holt and Marc FREDERIX for the Academy Award for Best Production Design in a black and white film, and indeed for the war film Is Paris Burning? (1966 ) by René Clément with Jean -Paul Belmondo, Charles Boyer and Leslie Caron in the lead roles.

The first award of the 1976 Guffroy won the César for Best Production Design in When the feast begins ... ( Que la fête commence ... ) by Bertrand Tavernier with the main actors Philippe Noiret, Jean Rochefort and Jean -Pierre Marielle.

In 1977 he was nominated twice for the César for Best Production Design: On the one hand for Mado ( 1976) by Claude Sautet with Ottavia Piccolo, Michel Piccoli and Jacques Dutronc, on the other hand for the horror film thriller The Tenant (1976 ) directed by and starring Roman Polanski and Isabelle Adjani and Melvyn Douglas in other roles.

At the Academy Awards in 1981 he won with Jack Stephens the Oscar for Best Production Design in the film drama Tess (1979 ) by Roman Polanski with Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth and Leigh Lawson in the lead roles. He was also nominated for Best Production Design for this film for the César 1980 and 1982 for the British Academy Film Awards ( BAFTA Film Award ).

At the award ceremony of the 1987, he won the César Award for Best Production Design in Pirates ( 1986) by Roman Polanski with Walter Matthau, Cris Campion and Damien Thomas. In 1990, Guffroy last time the César for Best Production Design in Valmont ( 1989) by Milos Forman, starring Colin Firth, Annette Bening and Meg Tilly.
