Póvoa de Varzim is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 5055 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

In the castle of Lanhoso barricaded themselves Theresa of Castile, the mother of D.Afonso Henriques, who waged war against them. The negotiated contract between mother and son from Varzim was one of the stages for later founding of the Kingdom of Portugal, the first king D.Afonso Henriques was in 1139.

First city rights ( Foral ) was the site in 1292 by King D.Dinis which were renewed in 1514 by King Manuel I..
