Province of Málaga

The Province of Málaga (Spanish Provincia de Málaga) is one of the southern provinces of the eight of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The capital city is Malaga.

Geography

Málaga is bordered on the southwest by the province of Cádiz, in the northwest of Seville, in the north of Córdoba and in the east on Granada. The south coast, the Costa del Sol, situated on the Mediterranean.

The Málaga province with an area of 7308 km ², the smallest among the eight provinces of Andalusia. In 2006 1.517.523 people lived in the province, nearly half of them in the city of Málaga; The population density was 208 inhabitants per km ².

Center of the province is the capital, an industrial and commercial hub, the port and airport are important tourist centers.

By 1995, the now autonomous city of Melilla was formally part of the province of Malaga.

Economy

The most important industry is tourism. Some of the most visited tourist destinations of Spain are located along the Costa del Sol and Málaga Airport ( IATA: AGP) is in terms of passenger traffic, with 11,565,735 people (as of 2003) ranked fourth among all Spanish airports.

Among the famous holiday resorts include the still partially exclusive Marbella or Torremolinos, whose concrete structures have become a symbol for the excesses of mass tourism. East of Málaga there is not so much mass tourism, here are Nerja and Torrox to popular holiday destinations.
