Rataje nad Sázavou

Rataje nad Sázavou ( German Rattay, also Ratais at the Sasau ) is a market town in the Czech Republic. It belongs to Okres Kutná Hora in Central Bohemia.

Geography

Rataje nad Sázavou is located in the Central Bohemian Uplands on the right bank of the Sázava. Neighboring towns are Talmberk in the north, Nový Dvur in the northeast, Makolusky in the east, in the southeast Utěchvosty, Kozojedy in the south, Čeřenice the southwest, Vraník in the west and Sázava in the northwest.

History

Rataje probably existed as early as the 10th century. The first mention of it was in 1289 with the entry of a Pribizlaus de Rathay. After a fire Rataje was rebuilt in the mid- 13th century. In 1293 it got to the Prague bishop Tobias of Bechyně; In the same year it was raised to the market village. The Bohemian king John of Luxembourg gave it as a fief under his chamberlain and marshal Henry of Lipa, who had secured the existing mounting in the east with the so-called Middle or Upper Castle and the Lower Castle, on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the creek Živný lay in the Sázava.

Attractions
