Ratzeburger See

Ratzeburg Lake is a lake in southeastern Schleswig -Holstein in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park.

Geography and location

The northeast shore is bordered by Mecklenburg- Vorpommern (municipality Utecht ) in Schaalsee. On the western shore, the boroughs of Great sarau, Pogeez and beech wood. Together with the Kuechensee it surrounds the island city of Ratzeburg. For a breakdown of the sea area in the Great Lake Ratzeburg, the Domsee and the Greater and Lesser Küchensee occurred when dams between the lakeshore and Dominsel were piled up:

  • The oldest historical connection between the island town and surrounding area was located in the West " Lüneburg dam ", the Ratzeburg with the "Old Salt Road " linking as a major trade route;
  • 1842 to 1847 the island was then östlicherseits connected to the surrounding areas through the establishment of the "Kingdom dam ," the official was given this name in the presence and in honor of the Danish King Frederick VII in Ratzeburg 1854;
  • 1894 was the construction of an additional dam between the island and the eastern shore, namely for the Ratzeburg light railway built " small embankment ", which is a little south of the "King Dam ", and creates a connection after Ziethenstraße and Mustin; Rail transport is on this dam but since 1934 no longer held.

Of Ratzeburg Lake was divided into the following individual lakes by these three dams:

  • The Great Küchensee located south of Lüneburg dam, island and small embankment and extends to Farchau;
  • The Small Küchensee ( the part of the town of Ratzeburg something melodious referred to as " town lake ", often called by locals, however, because of its small size " spittoon " ) is between the two eastern dams king dam ( in the north) and small embankment (in the south );
  • The Domsee is located north of the Kingdom dam and goes with a north-westerly bend in the Great Lake Ratzeburg over; from this it is not separated by a dam, but by a slightly narrower passage between the Domhalbinsel and the lake at Römnitz, the so-called " Römnitzer narrowness ";
  • The Great Lake Ratzeburg then goes in the north to Roth Husen.

Since the dams passable crossings have, it is possible, with appropriate ( not too high ) boats to sail all four parts of the Ratzeburger. However, the branch canal between Domsee and Small Küchensee since March 1, 2012 until about 2013 Autumn is closed due to major upgrades of work on King dam and lake road, so that a direct navigable link between Domsee and Small Küchensee currently does not exist.
