Reading to Plymouth Line

The railway Reading - Plymouth is a railway line in the south of England. It branches in Reading of the Great Western Main Line in the direction of Plymouth, where she meets on the Cornish Main Line. She was one of the main routes of the Great Western Railway before 1948 until its acquisition by British Railways and is now part of the Network Rail system.

The route from Reading to Taunton (where it intersects with the Bristol- Exeter line) was opened in 1906. This trains a detour via Bristol was spared to Devon and Cornwall. The line from Exeter to Plymouth was already about 60 years previously built by the South Devon Railway. The first section was opened in 1844. The total distance was completed five years later.

Here some branch trains on the branch line to Paignton, while the other trains which go on to Plymouth, have to cope with several climbs and tight corners to cross Dartmoor.
