Reek of Putrefaction

Occupation

Reek of Putrefaction is the debut album by the British grindcore band Carcass. It was released in June 1988 with Earache Records and offered a hitherto unique concept of medical terms combined with an artwork that showed a collage of autopsy photos.

Formation

After publication of the first demos Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment (1987 ) offered Digby Pearson of Earache Records the group to a recording contract. Ken Owen then started with the songwriting and was later joined by Bill Steer. Drummer and vocalist Jeff Walker wrote his texts using the medical dictionary, his sister, who just completed his training to become a nurse. In December 1987, the recordings take place Ritch Bitch Studio instead of sound engineer Mike Ivory and lasted one day. Since the band was unhappy with the result, the studio recordings have been remixed to March 1988 several times.

After the album's release, the radio presenter John Peel Reek of Putrefaction was done by, played the songs on his show on BBC Radio 1 and explained the album in the British newspaper The Observer on his personal " record of the year 1988 '. The autopsy photos for the album cover was taken from different doctors journals Carcass. Bill Steer explained later that the repulsive appearance of the album should provoke and in his opinion a certain penchant for humor show.

Reception

The album will be given a major impetus for the further development of the genre grindcore due to the precise and flashy guitar solos and vocals alternating between high and low Shouts Growling used. Carcass have expanded the grindcore band as the first of the genre to Metal elements and that it was the first time the association of Grindcore and Death Metal succeeded.
