Reignier-Esery

Reignier- Ésery (until 2007 Reignier ) is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is capital of the canton Reignier- Ésery in the arrondissement of Saint -Julien -en- Genevois.

Geography

Reignier- Ésery is located on 474 m above sea level, about halfway between Annemasse and La Roche- sur -Foron twelve kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on a plateau in the wide Arve Valley, east of the Taleinschnitts of Foron, which must not be confused with the homonymous river Foron which flows through La Roche- sur -Foron.

The area of ​​25.08 square kilometers municipal area includes a portion of the lower Arvetals. The northern border is always along the Arve, which has been cut here by erosion around 30 to 50 meters deep into the surrounding groundwater- rich gravel plain. In this virtually uninhabited valley of the river is largely natural condition. From the Arve, the municipality's area extends southward over the flood plain and a steep slope on the plateau of Reignier ( Plaine des seed beads with several major erratic blocks ). This is divided by several erosion valleys of streams that flow to the surrounding slopes. West of the main village Reignier the land rises steadily to the ridge of Ésery and on the high plateau of Bornes, which extends between the Salève and the massif of the Bornes. On the broad ridge north of Arbusigny the highest elevation of Reignier- Ésery is achieved with 832 m.

History

The territory of Reignier- Ésery was already inhabited during the prehistoric period. An important example of this period is the dolmen Pierre- aux- fées. Also from the Roman period and the Burgundy, various remains were found. For the first time the place is mentioned in records in 1270 under the name Rignie. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Renius. In 1974, the previously independent community Ésery was incorporated into Reignier. On 1 April 2007, the community was officially renamed in Reignier- Ésery.

Attractions

The village church of Reignier in Sardinian style was extensively restored in the 19th century and remodeled. A chapel from the 12th century is in Moussy, while the Church of Ésery originally as a chapel of the Château de Sacconay ( parts from the 13th century are still visible) was used. At the Arve the Tour de Bellecombe from the 12th and 13th centuries guarded once an important river crossing; the tower was burnt down in 1591. On the communal land are the castles of Magny, Villy and Pollinge. Also worth seeing is the Dolmen de la Pierre- aux- Fées from Mont Blanc granite.

Population

With 7008 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) is Reignier- Ésery to the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1970s, a significant population increase has been reported that in recent years due to its proximity to Geneva agglomeration still reinforced. Outside the old town center numerous single-family house neighborhoods were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Reignier- Ésery was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. In recent decades, it gradually developed into a residential suburb of Annemasse and Geneva. Today there are numerous companies of small and medium industries, as well as construction and trading companies and firms in the service sector. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, but especially in the Geneva - Annemasse, their work.

The place is a good infrastructure. It lies on the main road that leads from Annemasse to La Roche- sur -Foron. Further road links exist with Arthaz -Pont -Notre -Dame, Scientrier and Pers- Jussy. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of about seven kilometers. Reignier has a station on the railway line Aix -les- Bains- Annemasse.
