Rock ' n ' Roll is the eighth studio album by the British heavy metal band Motörhead. It is the last studio album for GWR Records and also the first with drummer Phil Taylor after his re-entry into the band.

Background

After Lemmy Kilmister had the drummer Pete Gill fired, the band gave its predecessor Phil Taylor on drums the job back. In this cast recordings began to rock ' n ' roll in June 1987. As a producer, commissioned Motörhead Guy Bidmead, who was involved as a sound engineer in the studio recording of No Remorse. Through its work, the band was not satisfied, so she took over the production of the album largely himself. There were relationship problems of guitarist Würzel, during which his then- girlfriend studio recordings, thereby disturbed that they fought out the disputes in the recording studio. Some of the recordings took place in Redwood Studio held in London, whose partner Michael Palin of Monty Python was. At the request of Motörhead Palin appeared as a cricket player from the 1940s dressed in the studio and recorded a sermon, which was inspired by a scene from Monty Python film The Meaning of Life. You will be heard as the intro of The Wolf ( informal title Blessing ). The piece Eat the Rich belonged to the soundtrack of the same film, Lemmy Kilmister in which plays a minor role.

Although the commercial success of the album back again remained below expectations, it's not a bad album, in the opinion of Lemmy Kilmister and contains with dogs, Boogeyman and Traitor very good pieces that consumed the band in their live program. However, he complained about the time pressure under which the album was recorded. So he had his vocal part at the end of recording sessions in spite of severe cold on vocals, which in his opinion in the images is also clearly audible. For the promotion of Rock ' n ' Roll hosted a MTV Europe International Lemmy Day. In the fall of 1987, the tour began on album in Europe, the scheduled performances in the U.S. with Alice Cooper began in 1988 with a month delay because the U.S. authorities required such a long time for the issuing of work permits for the musicians.

Reviews

Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic sees the tunes of the album more in the traditional rock 'n ' roll of Chuck Berry as rooted in heavy metal of Black Sabbath. The songwriting is uninspired for band ratios and the title song as well as Eat the Rich the only really good pieces on the album. Michael Rensen of the magazine Rock Hard, however, called Rock ' n ' Roll as the best Motorhead album since Ace of Spades, though sounded Blackheart and Boogeyman " quite spectacular ", the remaining tracks " [ blowing ] a contrast formally against the nearest wall."
