Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Otranto

The Archdiocese of Otranto (Latin: Archidioecesis Hydruntinus, Italian: Arcidiocesi di Otranto ) is a located in Italy Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Otranto.

History

The Archdiocese of Otranto was built in the 7th century as the Diocese of Otranto. In the 11th century the bishopric of Otranto was raised to an archbishopric. The bishoprics of Castro di Puglia, Ugento, Alessano, Gallipoli and Lecce were the Archdiocese of Otranto assumed as suffragan.

On June 27, 1818 the Archdiocese of Otranto was the bishopric of Castro di Puglia affiliated. The Archdiocese of Otranto lost on 20 October 1980 by the Apostolic Constitution Conferentia episcopalis Apuliae the status of a metropolitan diocese and the Archdiocese of Lecce was a suffragan.
