Roman Catholic Diocese of Tarnów
The Diocese of Tarnów (Latin: Dioecesis Tarnoviensis, poln: Diecezja Tarnovska ) is a Polish diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It belongs since 1992 as a suffragan to the Ecclesiastical Province of Krakow.
History
After the first partition of Poland in 1772, the southern part of the diocese of Krakow fell to Austria. At the suggestion of Emperor Joseph II, the Galician diocese Tarnów the former Vicar General in January Duval was founded in 1783 and appointed bishop. In agreement with the Holy See Suprema Petri cathedra beati it was by Pope Pius VI. confirmed and canonically erected on 13 March 1786. First reigning bishop was Florian Amand Janowski, previously abbot of the abbey Tyniec because the appointed bishop died in December 1785. The abbey was also from 1821-1836 bishopric.
On September 20, 1821, the diocese was formed as a diocese Tyniec from areas of the dioceses Krakow and Przemysl again and renamed on 23 April 1826 in the diocese of Tarnów.
In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (1861-1918) decreed the Bishop of Tarnów a Virilstimme in the Galician parliament.
