Genesis

The Romantic Road was established in 1950. With the foundation we pursued the goal of making Germany after the Second World War as a tourist destination attractive again. Germany should be presented as an image embedded in the European history of land with the appropriate equipment to architectural and art monuments. The first tourists were Americans who made the occupation soldiers and their families a relaxing holiday.

In early 2009 there was the first path change since the founding of the Romantic Road. The path now goes by Donauwörth along the Danube on Rain and Thierhaupten to Augsburg. From Augsburg the route now leads on Kissing and Mering to Landsberg am Lech.

On 14 September 2011, a further change in the route guidance, this time in the range of Landsberg Hohenfurch officially opened, which leads off the B17 over the villages. The course of Landsberg am Lech is now Erpfting, Denklingen, Schwabsoien, Old Town, Schwab Niederhofen after Hohenfurch and no longer have the 3- streaky -developed national road 17

In September 2012, the route between Nördlingen and Donauwörth was changed. Instead of leading directly on the B25 they now goes back roads of Nördlingen to Harburg, where it crosses the old course. From Harburg it leads then, also on side streets, according to Kaisheim to lead from there via the B2 to Donauwörth.

The Romantic Road ends at the Franciscan feet ( St. Stephen ) in feet.

Radfernweg and long distance hiking

For cyclists, there is a signposted alternative route. This 424 km langeRadfernweg Romantic Road runs mainly on back roads and bike paths. In addition there is one, sometimes running on narrower trails, long-distance trail. It was opened in Würzburg in 2006.
