The airport Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (Turkish Sabiha Gökçen Uluslararası Havalimanı ) is according to the Istanbul- Ataturk, the smaller of the two international airports of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul. After the Antalya Airport, it is the third largest airport in Turkey. The airport was named after the first female combat pilot in the world, Sabiha Gökçen, the adopted daughter of Kemal Ataturk, named in January 2001.

History

The airport was opened in 2001 to relieve Istanbul 's Atatürk Airport. He was, however, until 2004 rarely used to inflict any financial losses the operator of the airport Ataturk. However, the passenger volume is then increased in a short period of 245,000 (2004) to nearly 15 million ( 2012). Sabiha Gökçen Airport has an international and a national terminal.

In addition, he was the first step of the project " Industrial Park of advanced technology," which is planning a number of other services in addition to transportation, foreign trade, aviation and technology. The airport should be a similar model for the transformation of the area into a technology base, as it was Sabiha Gökçen for the emancipation of Turkish women in all work areas at that time.

The airport was designed for a much lower passenger volume than the Ataturk Airport. It is therefore manageable, has short distances and has hardly any traffic delays. The international terminal was originally planned for 3 million passengers per year, the domestic terminal for only 500,000 passengers per year. In June 2007 the Indian GMR Group was commissioned to the airport from mid-2008 to expand in order to increase passenger capacity. In October 2009, the capacity of the airport was eventually expanded to 25 million.

The airport is located in the Anatolian part of town, about 40 km east of the Bosporus.

Because of the proximity to the European city center fly to most major airlines only the Ataturk Airport on the European side of Istanbul. After Sabiha Gökçen fly from abroad mainly Turkish airlines. But even some charter and low cost airlines from Europe and especially from the CIS area prefer this airport.

Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Anadolu Jet SunExpress and some other small airlines use the airport for domestic connections.

For travelers from Western Europe, especially the compounds of low-cost airlines are interesting.

Since early 2008, the public buses ( Belediye Otobüsü ) go to the Istanbul Metropolitan Administration ( İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi ) to the airport from some districts ( such as Bostanci, Kozyatağı, Kadıköy, 4th Levent ). The shuttle bus operators Havas, has set the beginning of 2012 its shuttle service for Sabiha Gökçen.

Near the airport, is the Istanbul Park Circuit, the Turkish race track of Formula 1, seeks to strengthen along with the airport, among other things, the economy in this region in the Asian part of Turkey.
