Said Belqola

Said Belqola (Arabic: سعيد بلقولة, DMG Sa ʿ īd Balqūla; born August 30, 1956 † 15 June 2002) was a football referee from Morocco, who led the final of the soccer World Cup 1998 between Brazil and France, and thus the first African Referees in this function was. In addition, he was the first referee showed the red card in the World Cup final a player ( Marcel Desailly ).

Life and work

Belqolas international career started when he was in 1993 set by its association to the FIFA list. He was among the judges of the African Cup of Nations in 1996 and 1998 and conducted at two tournaments per two games. In 1997, he led the match between France and England at the Tournoi de France. At the World Cup tournament in 1998, he led two group matches ( Germany - USA and Argentina - Croatia).

Belqola was born in Tiflet, Morocco and worked in Fez as a customs official. He handed the ball of the FIFA World Cup Final 1998 at the French Football Federation against the payment, which he donated to local charities in Tiflet.

Belqola died on 15 June 2002 after a long battle with cancer. He was buried in Tiflet.
