Saint-Florent, Haute-Corse

Saint- Florent ( Corsican: San Fiorenzu ) is a commune and the capital of Nebbio region on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, with 1622 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Location

Saint- Florent is also known for its Mediterranean flair, the Corsican Saint- Tropez. The place is located high in the northwest of the island of Corsica in the Gulf of the same name between the almost uninhabited Désert des Agriates and the Cap Corse.

History

Saint- Florent goes back to a small community once came within the scope of the Genoese fortress round. The Citadel was built by the Genoese in 1440, and served until the 18th century as the seat of the Bishop of Nebbio and Governor's Palace. The small pianesische church from the 12th century, Santa Maria Assunta, was built as a cathedral for the former diocese Nebbio.

Although the devastating malaria raged, the place in the 16th century was strongly contested by the French, Genoese and Corsicans. From the fortress erected in 1439 but is out of the round Donjon very little to see. The fort itself was razed in the 17th century, when Genoa's reign seemed assured and Saint- Florent had no strategic significance. A new growth spurt got the city after Napoleon III. the draining of the marshes ordered and thus cut off the cause of malaria.
