Saint-Julien-lès-Russey

Saint- Julien- lès- Russey is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint- Julien- lès- Russey is located at 823 m, 7 km southwest of Maîche and about 15 km north- northwest of the Swiss town of La Chaux -de-Fonds (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a depression on the northwestern edge of the high plateau of Maîche high above the valley of the Dessoubre.

The area of ​​10.01 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by relatively weak in relief plateau Maîche, which is on average 860 m. It is mainly consisted of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. The plateau is divided by several, partly rocky terrain ribs in the longitudinal depressions, including those of Saint- Julien and from La Seigne. The latter is in the south of the survey of the Vieux Ban ( 962 m ) dominates, which simultaneously forms the southern boundary. Against the Dessoubre valley to the plateau is determined by the heights of Le Piot ( 973 m the highest elevation of Saint- Julien- lès- Russey ) and Mont Olivot ( 886 m). The municipal area extends down to the right side of the valley of the Dessoubre and also includes two short side valleys of the river.

Saint- Julien- lès- Russey consists of a lower part of the village ( 823 m ) and an upper part of the village ( 867 m) and several hamlets. Neighboring municipalities of Saint- Julien- lès- Russey are Battenans - Varin and Mont -de- Vougney in the north, and Maîche Frambouhans in the east, Les Fontenelle and Bonnétage in the south and Rosureux in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages, Saint -Julien formed its own rule, which was dependent on the barony of Belvoir. The castle was destroyed during the Burgundian Wars in 1474 by the Confederates. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

By January 1, 2009 there was a change in the membership of the district municipality. So far, belonging to the district Montbeliard, all municipalities in the canton came to the district Pontarlier.

Attractions

The village church of Saint- Julien is originally from the 16th century. The ship, however, was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. A chapel is located in the upper part of the village. From the former medieval castle only a few ruins are visible. In the village are farmhouses dating from the 17th to 19th centuries in the traditional style of the Franche-Comté are obtained.

Population

With 147 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint- Julien- lès- Russey is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1901 256 people were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1990s.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint- Julien- lès- Russey was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including a sawmill. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Frambouhans after Bonnétage. Further road links exist with Les Fontenelle and Mont -de- Vougney.
