The Sandelholzartige ( Santalales ) are an order of flowering plant ( Magnoliopsida ). The sandalwood tree ( Santalum album) provides timber and sandalwood. Also known are the semi- parasitic mistletoe (Viscum ). A majority of the species are semi- parasites; so they provide about their host plant with nutrients, but have chlorophyll for photosynthesis alone.

Dissemination

The members of the order are worldwide, outside cold areas. Particularly rich in species is the order in the tropics.

Description

There are woody plants: mostly shrubs, rarely trees or vines; or there are parasitic herbaceous plants. The leaves are usually alternate. Stipules are not available.

The plants are mostly dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ), rarely monoecious ( monoecious ). The inflorescences are often cymes. The very small flowers are hermaphrodite or unisexual radial symmetry and are three to sechszählig (rarely achtzählig ). There are usually three, rarely two, four, or five carpels present. The ovary is inferior. Are formed berries, seeded drupes or nuts.

The Santalales are within the Kerneudikotyledonen the sister group of the clade of Caryophyllales Asterides.
