The municipality Sapahaqui is a district in the Bolivian department of La Paz

Location in near space

The municipality Sapahaqui is one of five Municipalities of the province Loayza and located in the western part of the province. It is bordered on the southwest by the province of flavor, to the southeast by the municipality of Luribay, on the northeast by the municipality of Cairoma, and to the north by the province of Murillo.

The municipality has 145 localities ( Localidades ), the administrative center of the municipality is Sapahaqui with 219 inhabitants in the western part of the municipality, the biggest town in the municipality of Khola, with 461 inhabitants. (2001)

Geography

The municipality Sapahaqui is on an average height of 2500 m in the Cordillera Serranía de Sicasica, between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Amazon lowlands to the east. The mean average temperature of the region is 12 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500-600 mm (see climate chart Cochabamba ), with a pronounced dry season during the months of June and July.

Population

The municipality has an area of 823 km ² and had at the last census in 2001 a population density of 14.1 inhabitants / km ².

The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 61.1 years, the infant mortality rate of 6.9 per cent ( 1992) declined only marginally to 6.8 percent in 2001.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 75.6 percent, and that 84.6 per cent of men and 66.5 percent for women ( 2001).

79.7 percent of the population speak Spanish, 96.7 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 0.3 percent. (2001)

99.9 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 97.9 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

100 percent of the total 2,117 households own at least one radio, 3.4 percent a television, 27.2 percent a bicycle, a motorcycle 3.5 percent, 5.7 percent, a car, a refrigerator 1.6 percent and 0.2 percent a telephone. (2001)

  • Cantón Caracato - 4,900 inhabitants ( 2001)
  • Cantón Muruhuta - 1,203 inhabitants
