Saulcy

Saulcy is a municipality in the district Delémont the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Saulcy is located on 910 m above sea level. M., 16 km west-southwest from the cantonal capital Delémont ( straight line ). The village is located on a Jura ridge on the northeast edge of the heights of the mountains free (French Franches- Montagnes ).

The area of ​​7.9 km ² large municipality territory comprises the broad crest of the height of Saulcy and ranges in the north down the slope, partly down to the running of the Tabeillon, a left side of the creek Sorne. To the east the area extends up to the Jolimont, on with 1'010 m above sea. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. The southern part of the area occupied by the deep valleys of the Beusses Combe and Combe Mont Jean. From the municipality surface 1997 3 % was attributable to settlements, 50 % of forest and woody plants and 47% to agriculture.

At Saulcy include the hamlet of La Racine, 913 m above sea level. M. on the ridge east of Saulcy, as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Saulcy are Lajoux, Saint- Brais, Glovelier and Undervelier in the Canton of Jura and Rebévelier in Canton Bern.

Population

With 258 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Saulcy one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Jura. Of the 97.0 % inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 2.7 % (as of 2000). The population of Saulcy amounted in 1850 to 299 residents in 1900 to 256 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated constantly in the range of 220 to 280 people.

Economy

The community is still predominantly agricultural. There are few jobs outside the agricultural sector in the village. Many workers ( about 60 %) are therefore commuters and work mainly in the region Delémont.

Traffic

Saulcy is away from the major traffic routes. The village is by a bus, on the route Glovelier - tethered tramway runs Elan, to public transport.

History

First mention is Saulcy 1327 as SACIS; The hamlet of Racine was first mentioned in 1181. The territory of Saulcy was part of the Bishopric of Basel. During the Thirty Years' War the city was badly affected. Saulcy belonged until 1793 to Glovelier, after which it became independent. Between 1793 and 1815, the village belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura. Since the beginning of the 19th century Saulcy has its own church and thus became an independent parish.
