Develier

Develier is a municipality in the district Delémont the canton of Jura in Switzerland. The former German name Dietwiler is no longer used today.

Geography

Develier is located on 477 m above sea level. M., 4 km west from the cantonal capital Delémont. The former street village lines extending in the lowlands of the river La Pran, in the central part of the basin Dels Berger, a broad valley in the Jura folds.

The area of ​​12.4 km ² large municipality area includes a section in the central part of the intensively farmed level of Dels Berger basin. In the north of the municipal territory extends to the crest of the Jura chain of Rangiers ( on the floor of Develier to 880 m above sea level. M. ). On the southern slope of this chain, the two spring creeks and La La Pran Golatte that flow through the open valley of Develier to the east and the municipality for Sorne, a left tributary of the River Birs drain. The southern boundary of the area is the hill Chaux (614 m above sea level. M. ), an isolated elevation in Delémont. From the municipality surface 1997 9 % came from settlements, 43 % of forest and woody plants and 49% to agriculture.

To Develier include the hamlet Develier -Dessus, 564 m above sea level. M. on the southern slopes of Les- Rangiers chain, as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Develier are Lower Court, Courfaivre, Courtetelle, Delémont, Bourrignon and Boécourt.

Population

With 1394 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Develier belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Jura. Of the 93.8 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.6 % and 1.2 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Develier amounted in 1850 to 590 residents in 1900 to 632 inhabitants. Since 1950 (647 inhabitants) a significant increase in population was associated with a doubling of the population recorded within 50 years.

Economy

Develier until the mid 20th century was a farming village. Since the end of the 1960s was built on the eastern edge of the village thanks to its proximity to Delémont and good transport links an industrial and commercial zone. Jobs are available in the fields of building materials and furniture industry and in the manufacture of watch cases. Today, the community has developed into a residential village and many active people ( around 65%) are commuters.

Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the old main road from Delémont over the pass Rangiers to Porrentruy and had until the opening of the section Delémont - Porrentruy the A16 rain through traffic. This highway bypasses the village at its southern edge and was laid in the area of ​​the village for the purpose of noise control in a 800 m long tunnel mining. History

During the Roman era there was a settlement in the municipality, the remains of a Roman villa were found. From the 6th to the 8th century here, the native iron was processed in multiple forging.

For the first time the place is mentioned in 1139 as Divilier in a Bull of Pope Innocent II. In later times the name Titewilre ( 1184 ) and Tutwilre (1350 ) appear, from which was derived the German place name. As one of the 13 villages of the free reign Delsberg came Develier 1271 to Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Between 1793 and 1815 it belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

Attractions

The present parish church of Saint- Imier is from 1751 and was renovated in 1958. The parish Develier existed since the 13th century, only the meantime ( 1874-1907 ) they became dependent on the parish Courfaivre. In the hamlet Develier -Dessus since 1838 the chapel Sainte- Philomène. North of the village the Carmelite monastery of Notre- Dame de la Solitude was built in 1978-80.
