Sauvigney-lès-Gray

Sauvigney -lès- Gray is a town in the French department of Haute- Saône in the Franche-Comté region.

Geography

Sauvigney -lès- Gray is situated at an altitude of 198 m above sea level, 11 km east of Gray and about 32 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the southwest of the department, in the basin of the Saone, on the northern edge of the vast Talniederung the Morte and on the southern edge of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre.

The area of ​​10:44 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of south-east of the Saône. And is bordered on the east by the territory of the Cabri and on the south by the Morte. This ensures the drainage west to the Saône. Both rivers move through vast plains, which have a width of more than one kilometer and average are on 198 m. The fertile alluvial soils used for agriculture. To the northwest, the municipality's area extends to the foothills of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre, which are composed of Tertiary deposits. Neighboring communities of Sauvigney -lès -Gray are Beaujeu -Saint -Vallier- Pierrejux -et -Quitteur and Igny in the north, Angirey in the east, Choye and Saint- Loup- Nantouard in the south and Saint- Broing in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Sauvigney belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government had held the lords of Beaujeu. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name Sauvigney was first renamed in the 19th century in Sauvigney -lès- Angirey and 1914 in Sauvigney -lès- Gray. Today Sauvigney -lès -Gray is a member of the 16- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Marcel, dates from the 18th century. It has a remarkable interior decoration, including altars, a tabernacle, a silver ciborium and other furniture from the building time. Additional area attractions include the Croix de Calvaire jubilé and Lavoir from the 19th century, which once served as a laundry and watering cattle.

Population

With 78 inhabitants ( 1999) Sauvigney -lès -Gray is one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. The population had steadily decreased throughout the 20th century (1896 were still 233 persons counted ).

Economy and infrastructure

Sauvigney -lès- Gray was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Gray to La Chapelle -Saint- Quillain. Further road links exist with Velesmes - Échevanne and Beaujeu.
