Seine River (Ontario)

BW

It has a length of 240 km and flows from the Lac des Mille Lacs in a westerly direction through the districts of Thunder Bay, Rainy River and Kenora to Rainy Lake. The river formed in the days of the fur trade an important transport route. End of the 19th century was discovered on a river of gold. In the flow region different natural resources are degraded. The Seine River is also recreational activities such as canoeing and kayaking. The river was named after the river through Paris in France.

River diversion

In 1943 a section of the Seine River north of Atikokan was diverted so that an iron ore deposit below the previously traversed by the river and lake Steep Rock Lake was accessible to their exploitation. The river now runs from Marmion Lake to the Finlayson Lake and then south-westerly direction over Little Falls Lake and Modred Lake to the old river bed. The mine is no longer in operation today.

Hydropower plants

Is operated by the Brookfield Valerie Falls hydroelectric power station on the river diversion below the Little Falls Lake.

Further downstream AbitibiBowater operates two hydroelectric power plants, each with two vertical Francis turbines: Calm Lake and Sturgeon Falls (120 km and 90 km east of the town of Fort Frances ).
