Sergei Popov (athlete)

Sergei Konstantinovich Popov (Russian: Сергей Константинович Попов, English transcription Sergey Popov, . Born September 21, 1930 in Choronchoi, Buryatia, † June 25, 1995 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian long-distance runner, who competed for the Soviet Union. It was 1958 European Champion in the marathon.

Popov won from 1957 to 1959, the Soviet championship in the marathon. In 1958 he also won the European Championships in Stockholm. With his winning time of 2:15:17 hours, he undercut the old world record by Jim Peters for over two minutes, his lead over second-placed Ivan Filin was about five and a half minutes. 1959 Popov won the traditional peace marathon of Košice.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, the Ethiopian Abebe Bikila Popov's record undercutting by one second; Popov himself was fifth in 2:19:18,8 hours. 1962 at the European Championships in Belgrade ran Popov after 2:27:46,8 hours in sixth with over four minutes behind the Briton Brian Kilby to the finish.

Popov was 1.60 m tall and weighed about 55 kg competition times.
