Silvan Shalom

Silvan Shalom (Hebrew סילבן שלום; * August 4, 1958 in Gabes, Tunisia) was from February 2003 to January 2006 the 16th Foreign Minister of Israel. Previously, he served in the cabinet of Ariel Sharon for two years as Minister of Finance. He is a member of the conservative Likud party alliance. On 31 March 2009 Silvan Shalom took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister. Since 2013 he is Minister of Energy and water supply.

Life

Shalom emigrated in 1959 to Israel. At the age of 18 he was drafted into the Israeli army and reached the rank of corporal. After his military time, he began his studies at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, which he finished with a BA degree in economics. Later Shalom attended the University of Tel Aviv, where he made a law degree and the Master ( MA) in Social Planning.

Shalom worked as a journalist. He was elected for the Likud in the Knesset in 1992. Within the Likud Shalom is a prominent representative of the Sephardic religious expression. On March 7, 2001, he took over from Avraham Shochat Minister of Finance. In a cabinet reshuffle, he followed unexpectedly on 28 March 2003 Benjamin Netanyahu in the Office of the Secretary of State. Following the withdrawal of Sharon from the Likud Shalom has been touted as one of the candidates to succeed him as party leader. The choice of originating from Morocco Amir Peretz as party leader of the Avodah suggested a Sephardic candidates of the Likud, but the well-known " hardliners " Benjamin Netanyahu was chosen instead.

On January 13, 2006 Shalom resigned from the post of foreign minister.

The Likud party alliance took a total of 27 seats in the elections for the 18th Knesset on 10 February 2009. After the formation of the second Netanyahu government, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister ( Moshe Yaalon next ). The coalition includes, inter alia, the party Jisra'el Beiteinu of Avigdor Lieberman, the Labor Party with the party leader Ehud Barak and the Orthodox Shas party. Silvan Shalom is married to talk show host Judy Shalom Nir Mozes -. The couple has five children and lives in Ramat Gan.
