Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup is a team competition for female golf professionals, which modeled after the Ryder Cup every two years, will be held between the best female pros in Europe and the United States.

The initiative for this meeting came from the U.S. golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. Like the Ryder Cup is a team event of the 12 best golfers of both continents.

History

The first competition was held in 1990 and until 2002 was all even years - with alternating venues - is discharged. After the conversion of the Ryder Cup Solheim Cup calendar moved from 2003 to odd years to avoid scheduling conflicts.

In exchange the tournament in the U.S. and in Europe was held. Currently there are already 13 Solheim Cup were played. The U.S. is still a record holder with 8 wins, compared to Europe with five victories. In 2013, the European team celebrated their first win on American soil and was also able to defend for the first time their victory.

Game Mode

The competition format has changed over the years a little. It was not until the year 1996 started from both continents each with 12 players - 1990 there were eight, 1992 and 1994, respectively 10 players.

The game mode is similar since 1996 exactly the Ryder Cup format. Within a three-day match play competition, 28 games will be played.

The first two days of competition include two Spielzessionen, with a total of eight classic quads and eight four-ball best ball encounters. On the final day 12 - hole individual competitions are held.

In the classic format of four two team members play alternately a ball until it is in the hole. In contrast to this are the four-ball best ball games, where each player plays their own ball. At the end of the hole the better result of the two teammates is then counted. For the single-hole competitions, each an American play against a European. Each player plays their own ball for this round and achieved their own results.

The overall result is based on a points system, will be awarded at the total of 28 points in three tournament days. An encounter obtained is awarded a full point, every game is tied after 18 holes will be rewarded with half a point for both teams. The reigning Solheim Cup Champion requires a total of 14 points to retain the cup, while the other team needs 14.5 points to win the competition.
